The Sustainable Network

A network is a system of interconnected people, organizations, or other entities that share information, ideas, or resources.

Networks have the following characteristics:

  • People and organizations working purposefully toward one or more shared goals (e.g., ensuring that every student has a quality education that includes the arts)
  • Programs that approach shared needs or problems with intended solutions
  • Resources that include data, knowledge, and tools
  • Infrastructure consisting of formal and informal agreements, memberships, affiliations, and technological support structures
  • Continuous evaluation for organizational learning and improvement

Building a Sustainable Network

The AEP prepared a background document on the development of a sustainable network in preparation for the Access, Equity and Quality in Arts Learning Conference, held on June 19-20, 2009 in Seattle, WA. A summary of the session on building a sustainable network has also been prepared.

Examples

Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network (KCAAEN)
The KCAAEN brings together educators, school administrators, parents, cultural leaders, and citizens from across the nation. KCAAEN seeks to advance the quality of education through the inclusion of the arts in the curriculum. The Kennedy Center supports the growth and development of the Network and the efforts of participating State Alliances through staff consultation, professional development, grant support, and other resources.

Young Audiences
The Young Audiences Arts for Learning network includes 30 affiliates throughout the United States. Our affiliates provide performance-demonstrations, workshops and residency programs in all the arts disciplines: music, dance, visual arts, theater and the literary arts. YA programs are integrated into school curricula and meet state and local standards. Young Audiences Arts for Learning affiliates provide schools and communities with in-school, after-school, summer and family programs. YA programs take place in schools, libraries, community centers, hospitals, camps and parks. YA programs reach children with special needs and children at risk.

National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts
The National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts is the national service organization for a diverse constituency of non-profit organizations providing arts education in urban, suburban and rural communities throughout the United States. The National Guild advances high-quality, community arts education so that all people may participate in the arts according to their interests and abilities. We support the creation and development of community arts education organizations by providing research and information resources, professional development and networking opportunities, advocacy, and high-profile leadership.

Ohio STEM Learning Network
The Ohio STEM Learning Network (OSLN) is an unprecedented collaborative aimed at building and connecting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) teaching and learning capacity in regions across the State of Ohio. At its core, the OSLN is focused on student and teacher success, built from a slate of committed partners from Pre-K-12 education, higher education and business and industry.

Council of Great City Schools
The Council of the Great City Schools is the only national organization exclusively representing the needs of urban public schools. Composed of 67 large city school districts, its mission is to promote the cause of urban schools and to advocate for inner-city students through legislation, research and media relations. The organization also provides a network for school districts sharing common problems to exchange information, and to collectively address new challenges as they emerge in order to deliver the best possible education for urban youth.

ASCD Networks
ASCD is a national organization that develops educational programs, products, and services. ASCD networks are member-initiated groups designed to unite people around a common area of interest in the field of education. Networks allow participants to exchange ideas, share information, identify and solve problems, grow professionally, and establish collegial relationships. Each network is operated independently and provides different resources to its members. Some networks sponsor conferences or workshops and host Web sites or electronic forums.
