| Arts Education State Mandate |
| No. Education Codes 51210 (grades 1-6) and 51220 (grades 7-12) stipulate that "visual and performing arts, including dance, music, theater, and visual arts, with emphasis upon development of aesthetic appreciation and the skills of creative expression" shall be in the adopted courses of study. These are voluntary and not mandated, as is true of all cirriculum subjects and this is not exclusive to the four arts disciplines. | |

| Arts Requirements for College Admissions |

| Licensure Requirements for Non-Arts Teachers |
| Yes. The state legislature requires that visual and performing arts be included in the multiple subject training of generalist teachers. However, this requirement is implemented differently from one training institution campus to another. The state credentialing commission (The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing) only requires that the applicant pass about 6 items on the multiple subject exam; they do not track whether the applicant has taken visual and performing arts course instruction courses. | |

| Licensure Requirements for Arts Teachers |
| Yes. A visual arts credential, music credential, and English credential are required to instruct theater courses, and a physical education credential is required to instruct dance as a visual and performing arts course. A subject matter authorization in visual arts, music, theater, and/or dance may be attached to another credential (single subject or multiple subject) and that would authorize you to instruct in visual arts, music, theater, and/or dance. | |

| Continuing Education Requirements for Arts Teachers |
| Yes. A number of coursework hours are required every five years. This enables an individual to continue to hold an active credential in that credential area. We have no recertification in California. | |
